Følgeplanter og skadedyr i sukkerroer

Conclusion

• Results from 2023 and 2024 demonstrated that barley can be established in a simpel way by broadspreding the barley seeds together with seed bed preparation for sugar beets.
• The barley must be removed 30-40 days after broadcasting to avoid sugar yield losses unless attack by aphids, especially green peach aphids, are expeceted (see below).
• COBRI-trials (trials coordinated by NBR, IfZ, IRS, IRBAB) have demonstrated reduced aphid and virus yellows attack when barley is used. These results will be reported during 2025 and hopefully conclusions from this study can be used to make recommendations for barley removal in relation to aphid attack.
• Barley reduced trips attack significantly in the trials. It is expected that effects on trips also would be possible even if the barley is removed earlier to avoid negative effects on sugar yields.
• If risks of pest attacks increase in the future, it may be relevant to follow up with more trials and e.g. a) quantify yield losses when barley is removed in two steps (in the rows in step 1 and between the rows in step 2) or b) only establish barley between the beet rows.
• The topic Companion Plants may need to be further studied if severe pest attacks show up in the future.
