Conclusion

• Trials were in 2023 performed in an updated design to evaluate practical aspects of using barley as a companion plant to sugar beets.
• Results showed that barley can be established by broad-spreading it into the seed bed and has to be removed 6-8 weeks later in order to avoid yield losses.
• A clear reduction in trips-damage was observed at two sites. At two other sites, level of trips was low.
• COBRI-trials (NBR, IfZ, IRS, IRBAB) have demonstrated reduced aphid attack when barley is used. A conclusion from these trials is expected mid-2024.
