Conclusion

When choosing sugar beet varieties, the most important parameter is yield capacity. Comparing varieties there is a large variation in terms of yield and revenue. This year 77 varieties were tested in five yield trials (one location at Tystofte discarded) for the recommended list of Danmark. The variety Nakskov was in top 2021 closely followed by Cascara KWS and Falster. The average sugar yield in the trials 2021 for the marketed varieties was 16,5 ton sugar per hectare, and it is nine percent more than the average of 2020. The average sugar content for the marketed varieties was 18,1 percent in comparison with 17,5 percent in 2020. When a simplified economy calculation is performed the range for varieties that have been in the trials for more than two years is from +950 to -2.610 DKK per hectare.
This year five ALS-tolerant candidates from one seed company were tested. The yield level was significantly lower compared to the market segment without this trait. Also a first year candidate tolerant to virus yellow complex was included in the trials for listing in Denmark.
